PostHeaderIcon 10 Manicures Tasty Enough To Bite

mr_d976024c10bdc6You already know The Frisky has an obsession with nail polish, but did you know we’re also rather fixated on nail art and designs? Yeah, even though most of us would never rock crazy nails on a regular basis, we love looking at photos of women who are braver and more kitschy than us. Lately, we’ve seen some really cute food-inspired nail designs that have us wishing our manicurists were as talented as these.

PostHeaderIcon Slutty chic” is new trend for prom dresses

mr_6fbf9cf3471af5While the La Femme dress at the left (which is said to be one of the most popular of the season) looks tame compared to the other two dresses, we think our parents would have deemed it was too revealing, and we probably would have felt really uncomfortable wearing it. Should we just look at these new dresses as a sign of changing times and fashions and move on, or should parents and administrators have stronger input on the appropriateness of such prom dresses?

How do these new skin-baring dresses make you feel? Would you let your daughter wear a revealing prom dress? Have you ever had to send your girl up to her room to change for wearing something you felt was inappropriate? [NY Post]

If a parent approves a certain outfit, should a school be able to make a judgment call on which dresses are and aren’t appropriate? Lisa Maffei-Fuentes, the principal of Christopher Columbus high school in the Bronx, says she personally inspects every prom dress in advance by photo and again at the door. “I check all of the dresses to make sure their body parts are covered,” Maffei-Fuentes told the Post. “They’re not allowed to wear anything where their breasts are exposed. It can’t be very short, and their rear ends can’t be exposed.” If they do show up in a dress she deems unsuitable, the girls are sent home, or must make adjustments on-scene with safety pins, and sewing kits.

I can’t believe that mothers let high-school girls buy these dresses for prom,” a Saks Fifth Avenue sales associate told the New York Post. To be honest, neither can we. And with expensive price tags, we doubt girls are buying their own prom dresses with allowance and babysitting money. So if dresses like these are flying off racks, are the young ladies shopping for dresses without parents, or are their parents actually approving these choices?

When it comes to the actual prom event, there is no policy or dress code enforced by the Department of Education. The individual school staff may determine what is appropriate and what is not. As we’ve seen in recent news, one school in Mississippi outrageously canceled their prom when a lesbian student expressed an interest in wearing a tuxedo to her prom and attending with her girlfriend, because they thought it would be “distracting.” Are these revealing prom dresses more or less distracting?

Panoply dress via NY Post
Just as fun and cute Halloween costumes have been pushed aside for more revealing and sexy ones, prom dresses are getting, well, sluttier, too. While we may remember the taffeta gowns, and elbow-length gloves of proms past, teens are now looking for skimpier dresses that show off cleavage, backs, stomachs, and legs. Or all of the above, as seen on the model at left, wearing a popular dress from Panoply that retails for $370. The New York Post has labeled this new prom dress trend “slutty chic.”

PostHeaderIcon Jersey Shore’s Snooki Talks Self-Tanner

snooki_tan_mainWho took longer to get ready at night on Jersey Shore, the guys or the girls?
“I think it took the same amount of time, it really did—we’d start getting ready at 8 and we wouldn’t leave till like 10:30, 11. The boys would be gelling their hair, and Mike would take, like, an hour-long shower. Sometimes they [the guys] would ask us for bronzer.”

Will the poof be back for summer 2010?
“Honestly I don’t care if my poof is in style or not—it’s me. I don’t care if people like it, they don’t like it—that’s my style. Obviously girls are loving it because everywhere I go, I see a poof. I’m gonna rock my Kim K. hair—I did it this morning. I like it curled, I just started doing it.”

So do you think you’ll use self-tanner going forward rather than hitting the tanning beds?
“Oh yeah, definitely, definitely.”

What’s your favorite hair product?
“I love dry shampoo because it doesn’t leave your hair sticky and pretty much holds it better. I just spent like $80 on dry shampoo. I don’t even need to tease my hair or do anything, because if you feel my hair it’s very thick. So when I get out of the shower, I just let it dry and put it up in a poof–it takes two seconds. And I do not use a Bumpit. When I first saw the commercial a year ago I ordered it right away. I was so excited to get it in the mail, I put it in my hair, then I started walking down the hallway and it fell out–it didn’t stay in my hair!”

Looks like even the most loyal tanning-bed goers are learning that the sun is bad. It’s about time! This week Snooki (real name Nicole Polizzi) shot a video for Sunlove, a sunless tanner at Belmont Lounge in New York City. We stopped by for some one-on-one time to find out about her tanning habits—and poof-creating products.
When did you start using self-tanner?
“I just heard about Sunlove not too long ago and then I tried it out. It doesn’t leave your face greasy, and there’s no bad smell to it like other spray tans. I never used spray tanners until this one because I usually just went tanning. But you know after the taxing, you don’t want to deal with that, and friggin’ cancer—so this is a great product to replace all the bad stuff of tanning.”

PostHeaderIcon How to Wear Spring’s Boldest Eye Color!

mr_9888507f8a83d4M.A.C’s liquid liner comes with a great brush for added precision (a must-have when applying a bold color). Plus, it has a bit of a gold tint, which complements all brown and green-eyed girls. Try lining your lower lash line (like Kate Hudson often does) but, make sure to stay along the lash line. If you want to add something extra for a night out, you can extend the line past the eye for an inverted cat eye. (M.A.C Cosmetics Liquidlast Liner in Aqualine, $16.50, at maccosmetics.com).

Good luck experimenting with the trend, and let us know how it goes!

Urban Decay does color like no one else in the beauty biz– and this liner pencil proves just that. The creamy color glides on smoothly and stays put all day– and night. The secret lies in the fact that the pencil is made up of 50 percent moisturizing products, all trapped in a waterproof formula. Sounds good to us. (Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Electric, $17, at sephora.com).

LORAC’s eye pencil is ultra smooth and easily lines the eyes. We love the color of #15. If you’re worried about the harshness of the line, go over the bright color with an angled liner brush or soft smudge brush (try e.l.f.’s Small Smudge Brush, $3, at eyeslipsface.com) to soften the look. (LORAC Eye Pencil in #15, $16, at ulta.com).

Too Faced’s liner in Drunk Dial is a great liquid liner option that happens to come in the perfect color to try the aqua trend. If you’re going to use liquid liner in a bright color, we suggest waiting until a night out with the girls (guys are a bit intimidated by makeup trends, and your office may not find blue liner appropriate). When using a liquid liner, be bold and go for a great cat eye. Smudge the end of the line with a Q-tip and soften the corner. (Too Faced Starry Eyed Liquid Liner, $17.50, at sephora.com).

Our all-time favorite eyeliner is available in an aqua hue that’s perfectly appropriate for testing out this trend. The pencil claims to be a shadow and liner in one– but we prefer to use it as a liner only. Line your eyes with the metallic blue color on either the top lash line (lengthening the line to achieve a slight cat eye) or on the bottom lash line– only do both if you’re really brave. (MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Eyes, Blue with Green Highlights, $17, at sephora.com).

Adding an extra pop of color to your face is a great way to boost your beauty look, and this spring, colored liner is a big trend. Our personal favorites were the bright aqua lines seen at shows including Nanette Lepore and Balenciaga.

If you’re brave enough to attempt to copy this gorgeous look (and we hope you are– it’s a great way to attract attention to your best feature), read below for a list of our favorite aqua liners, and a few great tips for successful application.

PostHeaderIcon How To Make the Prettiest Ponytail

mr_8d66d37000b96a21. To get Shakira’s sexy updo, prep first by blow-drying hair straight with a round brush, which will create volume at the roots and make strands supersmooth, according to Harry Josh, international creative consultant for John Frieda.

2. Use a paddle brush to remove any tangles, then comb your hair straight back so that you don’t have a part.

3. Now tip your head back, and gather strands into a ponytail. Leaning creates volume plus prevents part lines and bumps. Plus: Hair That Gets You What You Want

4. When gathered hair is level with your eyes, secure it with an elastic band. Wrap it tight (shoot for three loops) so that the band doesn’t sag and look sloppy.

5. Style your bangs — don’t slick them back into the ponytail. And let short layers hang naturally, rather than forcing them into the elastic. A wispy, piecey look is sexy.

6. Section off the tail into three parts, and wrap each around a curling iron for 10 seconds. Gently brush out the curls for a bouncy, total bombshell effect. Check out 8 Hairstyles Men Love.

7. To fight frizz, pat a drop of John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion, $6.49, over your finished style.

PostHeaderIcon Drugstore Discovery Of The Week: The Great Rosemary Mint Shampoo-Off

mr_fdd15e0bd93a3d1The matching Rosemary Mint conditioner offers relief (it’s actually better at moisturizing than Aveda’s) and it’s brilliant when coated on ends, like a mask, to seal in hydration. However, there’s zero comparison as far as scent and experience go. Aveda’s has that exquisite, minty tingle that feels like a million little fingers massaging your scalp, whereas Suave’s formula just foams up and fades away with barely a tickle. Bottom line: If you want invigorating suds, Suave’s Rosemary Mint is a worthy contender, but it won’t replace the original hero product.

Everyone’s been in quite a lather over Sauve’s new Rosemary Mint shampoo. Not only is the name a carbon copy of Aveda’s best-selling shampoo, but the label actually says it’s “proven to invigorate hair as well as Aveda Rosemary Mint shampoo.” Talk about a beauty throw down! Clearly, Suave has Aveda beat on price ($2.49 for 14.5 oz. versus $9.50 for 8.5 oz.), but how about its performance? We took it for a test-drive and here’s our take: Suave didn’t skimp on using choice ingredients (it contains spearmint, eucalyptus, lavender, aloe, and rosemary) and it works well as a clarifying product, mopping up sweat and oil and boosting shine. But it can be more drying than Aveda’s version, especially if you color or flatiron your hair.

PostHeaderIcon Paris Hilton’s Sunglasses Cost As Much As A BMW. Ew.

paris-hilton-sunglassesIf you’re not a hotel-chain heiresses, try these  shades by Fantas-Eyes ($26) - they have the same rimless look and a bit of sparkle, but the price tag is more friendly to real people. Who lose their sunglasses.

These sunglasses are by LA-based designer to the stars, Luxuriator.  This model, the Duo 24, costs $65,000 and includes a 2 carat canary diamond and 132 hand-set pavé diamonds, adding up to a grand total of 3.45 carats of diamonds. In addition to Paris Hilton (above), they’ve been spotted on Oprah and Paul McCartney.

See some more reasonable shades in our guides to celebrity sunglasses and our favorite sunglasses.

All we can say is, she’d better not lose them. The Luxuriator sunglasses Paris is wearing below cost a cool $65,000. That means the price of this one pair of shades is roughly the same as a luxury sports car, or 100 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes, among a million other things.  Yet Paris throws them on to shield her eyes from the sun. No big deal.
