We have a mother goose who has made a nest right outside our work. everyone is wondering if she eats at all while sitting on the eggs & if so what would be recommended to feed her? how long does the mother goose sit on the eggs until they hatch? Please help, thanks!!!
Never place food near a nest. It can attract predators (other birds, mice, rats, raccoons, possum, etc.) that will destroy the eggs or eat the baby birds.
When a mother bird picks her nest site, she finds a place that is close enough to a food supply for her to get to in a hurry, when she takes a break from setting, but not close enough to endanger her nest.
The Canada Goose begins to incubate her eggs after she finishes laying them all - sometimes up to 15 eggs, but more commonly 2-8. Once incubation begins, the eggs should hatch in about 25-28 days. The goslings hatch covered with down and with their eyes open. They leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching with the ability to swim and feed. Unlike songbirds, the parents do not feed their babies. The young geese will fledge (leave the care of their parents) in 6-7 weeks.
Do not disturb the nest, because you could cause the mother to abandon her eggs. She views humans as predators.
Also, remember that in the US, all native migratory birds are protected under federal law (Migratory Bird Treaty Act). It is illegal for anyone to possess a protected bird, its nest, its eggs or even its feathers unless they have the required federal and state licenses. It is also illegal to disturb an active nest. Penalties for violating this law include fines of up to $500 and/or up to 6 months in jail for each offense.
Assuming you have a Canadian Goose vs. a regular gray, white…what I call a farm goose? Which thier diets are similar too.
The diet of the Canada Goose includes green vegetation and grains. The Canada Goose eats a variety of grasses when on land. It feeds by grasping a blade of grass with the bill, then tearing it with a jerk of the head. The Canada Goose also eats grains such as wheat, beans, rice, and corn when they are available. In the water, it feeds from silt at the bottom of the body of water. It also feeds on aquatic plants, such as seaweeds.
The mother and father both guard the eggs. Mostly the mother though. During this incubation period, the adults lose their flight feathers, so they cannot fly until after their eggs hatch. This stage lasts for 25–28 days.
If its like my chickens, lol … Occasionally but not very often she leaves the nest to go feed, but not too far, then goes back and sits on the eggs again shortly afterwards.
So they sit on the eggs until they hatch, and even after they have hatched they sit on the babies to keep them warm.
I would suggest putting food down around it and then leaving it, Then it can get up and get the food when it feels like it.
You could buy her some duck feed which is the most healthy.
Or you can offer her cooked rice, corn, peas and carrots.
Please no Bread as it can make birds sick.
Are you sure there are not 2 geess? the male and female usually switch so they both get a chance to eat and sit on the eggs. It takes 20 to 30 days for the eggs to hatch.
They are mostly vegetarians. They will eat insects and minnows and an occasional small frog. You could buy some cracked corn and give her. She will leave the nest long enough to eat and drink. I would not worry about her. Bread and pop corn (unsalted) are ok to give her once in awhile, but they have no nutritional value to her. Somewhere around 30 days or so and the eggs should hatch. Give or take a few days. Usually with ducks and geese it’s the female that does all the rearing. Please read my profile.
Yes, she will occasionally get off the nest and have a bite to eat. The eggs should hatch after about 25-28 days, and they will be waddling around in about a day. What fun to watch!
PLEASE dont feed her bread. It will make her sick. Put out romaine lettuce, brocoli, small peices of carrot, califlower, turnip, apple, pear.
She’ll leave the nest at times to eat, although she won’t travel far from the nest.
I think they mainly just smoke cigarettes in nervous anticipation.
