it depends on the material but best to turn inside out and dont pack the washer , use gentle cycle for all knits
I’ve found that both the water temperature and the type of detergent make a big difference. I used to get tons of little pills on my clothes with Tide, so I switched to Cheer and they went down. Also, consistently washing the garment in hot water can wear on the fabric, too. A good quality liquid fabric softener can work wonders as well.
