• PostHeaderIcon Why Do Americans Know So Little About Canada? Enough To Actually Ask If We Where Jackets Every Day.?

is this just poor education, or lack of caring enough to drive a couple of hours north and see for yourself? It really burns me, and NO we don’t live in igloo’s.

We are a pretty insular bunch down here, admittedly, but not all of us in the US are ignorant of Canada. I know what a fiddlehead is, for instance. My wife drove through BC on her way to the arctic circle and loved it… some of the most beautiful land she’d ever seen. She was surprised how eager the shops were to take American dollars… she’d exchanged her currency before she realized she really didn’t need to do so.
We appreciate all the comedians and William Shatner… thanks for that!

How much do you know about the United States? How can I know about Canada if I never went there and don’t have a reason to learn about it? Canada is in North America. French and English are the official languages there, and yes, I have heard it is quite cold in certain parts of Canada.
Could you please tell me some things about Canada. I would like to learn about it. Thanks and sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Well most Americans know that Canadians live in igloos. Some parts of Canada are very similar to the US (Toronto, Vancouver). It’s simply that the American school system provides almost no education on Canada.

No American I have met thinks that.

Tri-lingual, someone who speaks 3 languages.
Bi-lingual, someone who speaks two languages.
      Monolingual, an American.
Canada is just not mentioned in the schools or the news. The major networks spend all their time worrying about Paris Hilton.

Laziness and the fact that you guys speak French. Sorry.
Although having been to Montreal in January a few years back, I can honestly say that it does get FRIGID at times though a pub crawl eventually warmed me up.

Well, I am not sure you should be applying this specifically to Americans, are we the only ones you have encountered that don’t know much about you? But how much do you know about me? I live in Texas….it is quite a bit more than a “couple of hours” away and I am very different from someone in say…NY. Either way that does not mean that we have poor education or don’t care. While your example does seem like a very basic misunderstanding I would not generalize that to an entire country.
